Spot On Scanning is a family owned and operated business. Based near Dunkeld, we service the wider district of Western Victoria and South East South Australia with our passionate and 100% local technicians. We know and understand the importance of pregnancy scanning to ensure your ewes receive the appropriate care and management depending on their pregnancy status.
Spot on Scanning – expect the best is a bold business name that doesn’t leave a lot of room to hide. It was chosen with 3 objectives in mind that represent who we are and what level we want to participate within the industry.

our team
Joseph comes into his 9th scanning season this year. He loves getting out and about meeting new clients and catching up with regular ones. He is driven to always scan at perfection and hates it when sheep are drafted or painted incorrectly!
Joseph’s primary role is team trainer and mentor to the growing team. Joseph is also furthering his ag career by signing onto a 3 year peer advisory board.
Tania is really hitting her straps now after completing her second season and has earnt the advanced level. She has at times been thrown in the deep end out of necessity and we are loving how her confidence and competence has grown.
Tania loves getting out to see different people and their operations. She is super keen to get started this season to further her experience.
Brooke did some scanning for us at the end of last season. We were very impressed with how she approached her work and has the patience to get the job done well.
She is an excellent team player, that will put in accurate and consistent efforts that can be counted on. She is currently considered Intermediate but believe she will quickly earn her way to advance level during the season.
Nathan is our newest member of the team and comes in as a novice. He has recently completed his first round of training in December which he thoroughly enjoyed.
He has been farming with his family for the past few years and was keen to get some off farm experience meeting and mixing with the best producers in the district (what better way than with Spot On!) Nathan is a systematic thinker, precise and strives for accuracy, all the things that make a good scanner.

All our crates are set up with a 3 way drafting system.
TRIPLETING – Identifies ewes that are empty/undetectable, single bearing, multiple bearing and triplet bearing. The best window for scanning is >42 days from ram removal and < 77 days from ram introduction.
We are finding that there is increased demand for identifying triplets. Although there is a long way to go in closing the gap between the potential of triplet lambs and the reality of lamb survival, this can only be improved if managed and monitored what is measure. Certainly EID has potential in this space.
MULTIPLE – Identifies ewes that are empty/undetectable, single bearing and multiple bearing. The best window is >42 days from ram removal and <84 days from ram introduction. Certainly very mainstream and understandably it represents great value for money and by far the best dollar spent.
A recent analysis of scanning funded by AWI and MLA concluded an average of 400% return or $5.75/ewe profit over short, medium and long growing seasons and over merino, merino terminal and maternal flocks (see AWI Beyond the Bale article – page 24). There was not one example of a producer scanning which resulted in a lower profit.
PREGNANT/UNDETECTABLE – A very simple scan that simply identifies the pregnant ewes from the empty/undetectable ewes. The technician needs >42 days from ram removal date to accurately determine all viable pregnancies. In the right context can be the right job for the right time.
FOETAL AGEING – Split your ewes into early, mid or late lambing. This is a really cost effective tool to tighten your lambing period without having to take rams in and out. We find that in tighter seasons this is very handy information.
EID – We have two full Eid setups including XR5000 indicators and and trutest panel readers enabling clients to fully capture their scanning records against the individual tag.
We believe that Eid has a lot of unrealised potential and with a clear objective, some understanding and the right support can be another great tool in the toolbox.
DATA – A massive project still under development but producing some great reliable conception and reproduction rates across breeds, ages, location and time of joining.
This will only increase with time. Our aim is to provide a benchmarking service to give clients comparatives to their sheep production system.
